Mario plays similarly to his counterparts from future games. Others are de-mixed versions of Melee characters and others are original characters made exclusively for Smash Remix. Out of all the characters you have to choose from, there a little someone from almost everything. The reason I was so excited to try this game, and I still think this was it's neatest feature, was the fact that it was combining several series of games in one.
